Statement of Policy
The SRNT 's 9th Annual Meeting will center around a variety of themes, including international issues and topics of basic, clinical and public health sciences, and will include invited addresses by leaders in these fields. This year's program also will include state of the science symposia, oral presentations, roundtable discussions, and a new investigator paper session. A vital component of the program will be poster sessions that present the most recent research findings in the field of nicotine and tobacco and will take place throughout the conference. In addition, SRNT will have pre-and post-conference meetings.

Pre-Conference Symposium: |
| Tobacco addiction constitutes not only a hugely prevalent drug abuse problem in its own right; tobacco use and nicotine dependence also accompany the abuse of other substances such as alcohol, and the consequences of tobacco use beyond addiction are frankly devastating for human health. For these reasons, NIDA, NCI and NIAAA are jointly committed to make contributions to the discovery, development and delivery of effective treatments for tobacco addiction, and we have initiated collaborative efforts to achieve progress. This symposium will consist of three components which will feature examples from our mutual efforts in the discovery of targets for potential medications, the development of medications based on a platform of existing targets, and the delivery and adoption of medications. In addition, the symposium will describe our overarching plans for our future efforts. During the Discovery section of the program, speakers will address the most recent findings in the fields of nicotinic receptor biology and CNS neurochemical systems such as GABA and glutamate that play a role in the effects of nicotine. In addition, discussion will inform the question of the nature of model systems that might be used to advance the discovery agenda. The Development section of the program will provide a background to the drug development process itself, and in addition feature presentations on emerging medications, such as antidepressants and nicotine vaccines, as well as an overview of medications in late-phase development. In the final section of the program, Delivery, the focus will shift to strategies to improve the delivery of medications, as well as challenges to delivery and models in the health care system and beyond for the effective delivery and use of medications. | |
| There is no fee for this symposium, but space is limited. Pre-registration is mandatory. | |
