Nominations are currently being sought for three awards to be announced at the 2005 SRNT Annual Meeting.
Langley’s classical research, performed in the early 1900’s, described the effects of nicotine at neuromuscular and autonomic ganglionic sites. This research led directly to theories about the chemical mediation of neuronal transmission and the concept of neuronal receptors. Thus, Langley’s early research contributed to basic findings on the functioning of the nervous system as well as understanding of the biological basis of tobacco dependence.
The Langley Award is given once every three years by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. The award honors a scientist who has made ground breaking advances in basic nicotine research in one of three areas: (1) pharmacology, (2) neuroscience, (3) genetics. The award consists of a $2,000 (USD) prize, a plaque, and an expense-paid trip to the SRNT Annual Conference in 2006 to present a plenary lecture on the applicant’s research.
Basic research includes research aimed at understanding the neuronal mechanisms of nicotine actions. It includes research on neurochemical and physiological effects of nicotine as well as research on properties of nicotine receptors and genetic mechanisms that influence response to nicotine. The research would generally be conducted with animals, of cellular preparations of tissue at the molecular level, and is distinguished from clinical pharmacology research conducted with humans.
SRNT members are encouraged to submit nominations for this award. Submissions must include: (1) one or more letters of nomination outlining the merits of the nominee; (2) a one-page summary of the nominee’s research contributions; and (3) a copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae. Nominees do not have to be members of SRNT.
This award is given each year to a new investigator who received his/her graduate degree (Ph.D., M.D., etc.) within the past 7 years. The award consists of a $750 prize and travel support to the 2005 Annual Meeting. Selection of the award winner will be based on the research quality and productivity of the applicant and on the quality of the research abstract submitted for presentation at the 2005 Annual Meeting.
Candidates should send the following materials to the awards committee:
This award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public health and tobacco control through science-based
public policy and public advocacy. Nominees do need to be an SRNT member. To nominate a candidate please submit a letter of nomination and two supportive letters, along with a copy of the nominee’s curriculum vitae. Letters should outline the nominee’s accomplishments, values and contributions of his or her work to eliminating tobacco-caused death and disease.
