Program Chairs Introduction

Dear Colleagues:

The SRNT 11th Annual Meeting held jointly with the 7th Annual SRNT European Conference, will be held March 20-23, 2005 at the Hilton Prague in Prague, Czech Republic. The deadline for abstract submissions is midnight (CST) Friday, September 17, 2004. All abstracts need to be submitted via the internet on the SRNT website located at http://www.srnt.org.

SRNT’s mission is to promote a greater understanding of nicotine and tobacco through biological, behavioral, and social perspectives. The goal of the Annual Meeting is to present and disseminate information about ongoing nicotine research from all perspectives. This scientific meeting brings together an international group of basic, clinical, and public health scientists from academia, government, and industry.

The SRNT program in 2005 will center around a variety of themes, including international issues and topics of basic, clinical, and public health sciences, and will include invited addresses by leaders in these fields.

Highlights of this year’s program include the following:

Dr. Derek Yach, Lecturer in the Department of Epidemiology and Public Health at Yale University, and former Representative of the Director-General of the World Health Organization, will deliver this year's Keynote Address.
Dr. Eric Kandel, University Professor of Physiology and Psychiatry at the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and 2000 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, will deliver the Pre-Clinical Theme Lecture.
Dr. Karl Fagerström, President of Fagerström Consulting and Director of the Smokers Information Centre, will deliver the Clinical Theme Lecture.
Dr. Ann McNeill, Honorary Senior Lecturer in Psychology at St. George’s Hospital Medical School, University of London, will deliver the Public Health/Epidemiology Theme Lecture.
Dr. Michael Fiore, Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for Tobacco Research and Intervention at the University of Wisconsin Medical School, will deliver an awards address as recipient of the 2005 Doll/Wynder Award for Research in Epidemiology and Public Health.

There also is an exciting pre-conference meeting being planned for Sunday, March 20, that will highlight issues and opportunities in global tobacco research.

SRNT encourages submission of abstracts describing cutting-edge research in nicotine and tobacco. Preference will be given to data-based abstracts, and submissions that have not been published or presented elsewhere before the meeting. The SRNT Program Committee invites submissions for organized symposia as well as individual paper and poster presentations. All abstracts will be evaluated on the basis of scientific merit by peer review. The SRNT Program Committee will make decisions regarding acceptance of submissions and corresponding authors will be notified of a decision in December 2004.
