Preliminary Program Information

The SRNT program will center around a variety of themes, including international issues and topics of basic, clinical, and public health sciences, and will include invited addresses by leaders in these fields. This year’s program also will include state-of-the-science symposia, oral paper sessions, workshops and roundtable discussions, a new investigator paper session and a member’s business meeting. A vital component of the program will be poster sessions that present the most recent research findings in the field of nicotine and tobacco and will take place throughout the conference. No other sessions will coincide with the poster sessions in order to maximize exchange of recent findings and promote communication among researchers with common interests.

A preliminary schedule is available now and the complete program schedule will be available in December.

8:30 a.m.-9:00 a.m. Welcome and introductions

9:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m. Session 1: Overview
Session 1 will serve as an introduction to the pre-conference. Themes to be addressed include networking, capacity building, and advocacy especially in support of the Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC). The session will focus on issues in adult and youth tobacco reduction and will feature four speakers from geographically diverse regions: Abu Abdullah, Wara Alderete, Taghrid Asfar, and Neo Morojele

10:30 a.m.-10:45 a.m. Break

10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. Session 2: Building Capacity Session 2 will address national capacity building in the context of the
FCTC. Fran Stillman will provide an overview of a needs assessmentconducted with pre-conference participants. Tom Glynn will focus on resource mobilization, specifically American Cancer Society research funding priorities and the RITC small grants initiatives. Derek Yach will discuss challenges and obstacles facing tobacco control as we look toward the future. Mira Aghi will present a case study of capacity development in India.

12:15 p.m.-1:30 p.m. Poster session and lunch on your own

1:30 p.m.-3:00 p.m. Session 3: Networking
Session 3 will feature several innovative projects from different areas of the world that are networking tobacco control researchers, advocates, and consumers. Heather Wipfli will speak on "The Global Tobacco Research Network and the Future of Information Networking," Wasim Maziak/Eyad Bachir on "Networking to Support Research in Developing Countries --the RAM Project;" Jean Francois Etter on "Using the Internet to Help People Quit Smoking;" Konstantin Krasovsky on "Tobacco Control Network in the Russian-speaking Countries;" and Ruben Israel "Learned Lessons from Networking for Tobacco control: GLOBALink"

3:00 p.m.-3:15 p.m. Break

3:15 p.m.-4:45 p.m. Session 4: Application of Research to the Implementation of the FCTC This session will highlight the challenges and the demonstrated successes from the Middle East (Mostafa Mohamed), the European Union (Michael Kunze), South East Asia (Naowarut Charoenca), and the Western Hemisphere (Geoffrey Fong will report on the International Tobacco Control Evaluation Project). This session will provide participants with the opportunity to learn more
about the FCTC and its relevance to research opportunities and tobacco control advocacy.

4:45 p.m.-5:00 p.m. Concluding comments

We invite abstract submissions for poster presentation at the pre-conference. Abstracts should be relevant to global tobacco control including research, advocacy, and capacity building efforts. All abstracts should be prepared in plain text, in English, should be no longer than 300 words, and must include information on sources of funding. Submissions must be received electronically (preferably in MSWord) no later than 12:00 midnight (CST) on Monday, February 7. Please submit abstracts to Melissa Stigler at stigler@epi.umn.edu

Please check the appropriate box for the pre-conference when you register for the main meeting. If you are already registered for the meeting but have not yet signed up for the
pre-conference, please email SRNT at: meetings@srnt.org. If you plan to attend the pre-conference ONLY, please complete the registration form and check the pre-meeting conference box. Pre-conference registration will be on a first come, first served basis. We encourage early registration to guarantee that space will be available.
