From the Editor

SRNTDear SRNT’ers,
This is my last issue of the Newsletter. Being Editor of the SRNT Newsletter has been a wonderful experience. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed getting to know so many members and the committee and administrative staff who make this organization function so well. We reformatted the Newsletter three times during the past three years, and redefined the content in order to create what we hope is an accessible, interesting, and enjoyable look into our Society.

I wish to thank the many members who submit highlights, publications, and articles. Sharing this information with your colleagues provides both useful information and a source of pride in our society. I greatly appreciate your input. Special thanks for this issue go to Jacques Le Houzec, Nancy Rigotti, Karen Saules, and Herb Severson for taking time out of their busy schedules to write articles.

My most heartfelt thanks go to my Assistant Editors, Christine Cody for her invaluable assistance with editing and production, and to Erika Westling for the Newsletter layout. In addition, I want to express my appreciation to John Hofmann for his technical expertise and assistance with posting and distribution of the Newsletter. Finally, I must acknowledge David Abrams, Rick Brown, John Hughes, Beth Klipping, Harry Lando, Jacques Le Houzec, Ed Lichtenstein, Ken Perkins, and Nancy Rigotti (the Newsletter Advisory Committee), who’ve provided me with valuable feedback and insight over the past three years. It’s been wonderful working with all of you, and I look forward to future collaborations!

Now I’d like to take this opportunity to “introduce you” to Karen Saules, (formerly Downey), PhD, who will become the Editor of the Newsletter, beginning in February 2004. Karen is an Associate Professor of Psychology and Psychology Clinic Director at Eastern Michigan University. Her research interests include substance abuse treatment, comorbidity, and co-factors. In her limited spare time, Karen says that she and her husband, Pete, enjoy boating and fishing.

I recently asked Karen why on earth she wanted to take on the role of Editor of the SRNT Newsletter. Here is her reply:

“I joined SRNT in 1995, but then let my membership lapse for a while when I got more involved in non-nicotine substance abuse research. I re-upped in 2001 and have been looking for ways to get more involved in SRNT. When I saw the email about the need for candidates for the Newsletter Editor position, it appealed to me as a great way to learn more about the organization’s activities. I was optimistic that it would enable me to more effectively interact with a broad cross-section of the membership. At the encouragement of Cynthia Pomerleau, a former SRNT newsletter editor, I was emboldened to take on this challenge.

I have been impressed with how the Newsletter has evolved over the years since its inception. It is quite sophisticated and provides a wealth of useful information and links to valuable webbased resources. I hope that we can continue this trend of on-going development over the next three years while I serve as Editor. I am comfortable with the “editing” component of this task, but will need to rely on members to continue to take time out of their busy schedules to provide contributions of interest to the membership, so that the Newsletter will continue to unify our organization.”

Based on my experience, I trust that the membership will continue to provide contributions, suggestions, and improvements to the Newsletter over the coming years. I am confident that Karen will be an excellent Editor of the Newsletter, and anticipate that you will welcome her with the same enthusiasm that you showed to me three years ago. I hope to see many of you in Scottsdale in a few weeks! Ciao!
