Position Openings (Postdoctoral)

Vice Chair, Faculty, and Postdoctoral Positions available in the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, University of Kansas Medical Center. The Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health (www.kumc.edu/prevmed) is a dynamic, multidisciplinary group of 24 faculty with funding in cardiovascular disease prevention, obesity, nutrition, breast cancer prevention, smoking cessation, substance abuse, and outcomes research. The department is embarking on an ambitious expansion and is recruiting tenure track or tenured faculty and post-doctoral fellows. The areas of recruitment are for a developing program in nutrition, obesity, and physical activity and an established program in nicotine and tobacco dependence. Candidates should have a doctoral degree in epidemiology, statistics/biostatistics, nutrition, health education, social/behavioral sciences, health communications, psychology, or a medical degree (MD). Faculty will have varying (based on experience, interest, and funding) teaching and mentoring responsibilities with MPH and medical students. A new MS degree in research methods will be available in Fall 2004, and plans are underway to develop a doctoral program. The department has a strong track record in assisting junior faculty engage in mentored research and obtain independent funding. Excellent collaborative research opportunities exist with the Center on Aging, The Kansas Cancer Institute, and the Departments of Health Policy, Nutrition, Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, and Psychology. The Medical Center is a full-service, tertiary care center, in Kansas City, a rapidly growing city of 1.5 million. The primary responsibility of the faculty and post-doctoral fellows will be to assist in building active programs of research. § Vice-Chair: Associate or Full Professor with a track record in extramurally funded research. The primary responsibility is to assist in building of active programs of research and department administration.

§ Faculty (three positions): Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor with ample protected time to build strong extramurally funded research programs.

§ Biostatistician Faculty: Assistant or Associate Professor to assist in the design and analysis of behavioral, basic science, and clinical research projects, to serve as a collaborator on grants, and assist in the development of new programs.

§ Postdoctoral Fellowships (six positions): Appointments for 2-3 years with flexible start dates, competitive salaries, excellent resources for career development, and liberal benefits. Fellowships tailored to individual’s career goals including opportunities for grant writing, teaching, clinical work, M.P.H. or M.S. (Research Methods) degree, and authorship on manuscripts. Mentoring will be available from psychologists, physicians, epidemiologists, and statisticians.

Post-doctoral Fellow in Clinical Psychology, Treatment Research in Nicotine Dependence, Yale University School of Medicine. A two-year post-doctoral research fellowship in clinical psychology, focusing on nicotine dependence treatment in refractory smokers, including comorbid populations with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression, is available is available in the Program for Research in Smokers with Mental Illness (PRISM) at the Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) and Yale University School of Medicine starting in July, 2004. The successful applicant will work within a multidisciplinary team in coordinating the assessment and management of research subjects enrolled in four funded clinical trials currently being carried out in the PRISM research group. The applicant would have primary responsibility as project Director for a new NIDA-funded trial of a dopaminergic medication (selegiline hydrochloride; Eldepryl®) for the treatment of nicotine dependence in refractory cigarette smokers. Opportunities to work with psychiatric smokers including patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder will also be available, as well as in an on-going study of a nicotinic antagonist for the treatment of SSRI-refractory major depression. Teaching

Assistant Professor (Clinical Health Psychologist). The Department of Psychology at the University of Rhode Island anticipates an opening for a tenure-track, academic year appointment for July 1, 2004, in the area of clinical health psychology. A Ph.D. in Psychology from an APA-approved clinical psychology program is required and must be awarded by July 1, 2004. We will consider only candidates who have an APA-approved internship, and are licenseeligible in RI. Also required: (1) demonstrated research productivity in some area of health psychology with preference given to applicants in the area of population-based prevention and/or health promotion; (2) demonstrated potential to obtain external research funding; and (3) demonstrated teaching excellence. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and supervise clinical practica for graduate students, to teach graduate clinical psychology courses and undergraduate psychology courses, and to participate in thesis and dissertation supervision. Position in Human Behavioral Pharmacology of Nicotine. Work in the laboratory of Dr. Kenneth A. Perkins at the University of Pittsburgh. Ongoing NIDA-supported projects include environmental modulation of nicotine discrimination, sex differences in influences on tobacco self-administration, and individual differences associated with sensitivity to nicotine, including genetic and personality factors.
