Newsletter Staff |
SRNT NewsletterFebruary/March 2005, Volume 11, Number 1 From the Editor
Dear SRNT Members, I must confess that I was quite concerned that we would not have enough material to merit publishing this February/March issue of the SRNT Newsletter. I reasoned that people would be too busy preparing for the upcoming meeting in Prague to devote much time to new contributions. I am happy to report that I was very wrong about this. Yet again, our members came through with flying colors! If you find any of the articles in this unexpectedly voluminous issue to be particularly stimulating, please be sure to thank the contributors when you see them in Prague. As you start making your travel plans, I hope that you will enjoy reading the Prague tourism information and photos provided by SRNT Meeting Planner, Sheila Kirschbaum. Other SRNT staff have also contributed to this issue: John Hofmann, our Webmaster, has provided a summary of some recent updates to the SRNT Website. Bruce Wheeler, our new Executive Director, has provided us with some of his thoughts as he has been settling into his new job. It is my hope that these contributions will keep members better informed about SRNT's operations and the various mechanisms for members to provide input or otherwise get more involved. To follow up on some threads discussed on our listserv over the past few months, this issue also includes some member commentaries that I think you will find thought-provoking. Scott Tomar and Brad Rodu have provided overviews of their respective positions on the "smokeless tobacco debate", a discussion to which many contributed on the listserv. In addition, Martin Raw has prepared us a summary of his data and reflections on workplace policies which prohibit hiring smokers, also an issue which generated some interest on the listserv a while back. Thanks to some other members, we have been able to continue our two regular features: the Book Review and the Research Activities at a Featured Program article. This month, Scott McIntosh has provided us with a helpful review of Molly Holzschlag's 250 HTML and Web Design Secrets, a book that many of you might find useful if you are embarking on Web-based research. Jeff Baskin has prepared us an overview of the mission and research activities of the Pacific Rim Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center (PRTTURC), formerly known as the TTURC at the University of Southern California. Stay tuned for the next issue of the SRNT Newsletter, which should be out in May. At that time, I am planning to provide some highlights from the Prague meeting, including an introduction of new SRNT officers who will be assuming their duties after that annaul meeting. In addition, Mark Parascandola will be providing us with his book review of Unfiltered: Conflicts over Tobacco Policy and Public Health by Feldman and Bayer (2004). I also hope to include a report on the recent activities of the Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research at the University of Pennsylvania and the Tobacco Use Research Center at the University of Pennsylvania As Ken Warner noted in his President's Column, he will soon be transitioning from our President to Past President. I would just like to thank Ken for all his support as I transitioned into my role as newsletter editor. Despite the fact that he assumed the Presidency sooner than anticipated, he was somehow able to quickly provide effective leadership, which I must say included a fair amount of assistance and encouragement to me, personally. This newsletter has benefited greatly as a result of his input. While I will miss Ken's good humour and enthusiasm, I am also looking forward to working as effectively with Dr. Balfour as we welcome him into his Presidency. As always, please do not hesitate to send me your suggestions, contributions, comments, letters, and feedback on both content and format. You are welcome contact me at ksaules@emich.edu, or by more-traditional methods, if you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to future issues. Warm regards,
