Upcoming SRNT/SRNT European Conference
March 20-23, Hilton Hotel, Prague, Czech Republic
by Sheila Kirschbaum
The event-of-the year for SRNT is just around
the corner! The Annual Meeting this year will
begin with an Opening Reception on Sunday evening, March 20 (complete with traditional
Czech entertainment!). The scientific program
will highlight the latest nicotine and tobacco
research in pre-clinical, clinical, and public health
domains, with colleagues from academia, government, and industry. Featured lectures will
be given by Dr. Derek Yach (keynote lecture), Dr. Karl Fagerström (clinical theme lecture), Dr.
Eric Kandel (pre-clinical theme lecture), Dr. Ann McNeill (public health/epidemiology
theme lecture), and Dr. Michael Fiore (Doll/Wynder award address). The program will also include state-of-the science symposia, oral paper
sessions, poster sessions, a new investigator paper session, a member's business meeting, and
special workshops. An exciting pre-conference meeting on Global Issues and Opportunities in
Tobacco Research will also be held on Sunday, March 20. Further details and a preliminary program
can be found on the SRNT website (www.srnt.org).
Prague, Czech Republic: Prague has been described as both the "Rome of the North" and
the "City of 100 Spires". Both are apt descriptions, as its' skyscape is dotted by the spires of
centuries-old churches. Prague is one of the few central European cities to have emerged
virtually unscathed during World War II, and boasts architecture, monuments, and sculptures from over
10 centuries.
The medieval city of Prague, capital of the
Czech Republic, straddles the Vltava River. Although
the city is connected by 17 bridges, the Charles Bridge, built in the
13th century, is the most famous. The bridge's namesake, King Charles
IV, is honored with a statue at the entrance, but
it doesn't end there. This bridge has been closed
to vehicular traffic so that visitors may
leisurely appreciate the many statues of saints
and apostles flanking the sides of the bridge. The
21st century has also brought a crowd of
portrait artists, musicians and souvenir shops to
the bridge, and is a "must-experience" for all who
visit Prague.
Prague Castle, Europe's largest castle, is a sprawling complex perched atop a hill on the bank
of the Vltava River. Construction on this castle began around 1000 AD, but one of its main
attractions, St. Vitus Cathedral, wasn't built until the
14th century. To experience an unforgettable view
of the city, climb to the bell tower for a birds-eye look at the red-tiled roofs and church spires
that Prague has to offer. Roam the gardens and immerse yourself in the many statues and
ornamental windows and walls.
Prague is a city of yesterday and today. Although steeped
in centuries-old history, it is also a city filled with
theaters, concert and exhibit halls, museums and galleries. It
offers riverside promenades, breathtaking architecture, and
café-lined squares. Prague's diversity has captivated visitors
for centuries. With its welcoming atmosphere and
friendly natives, SRNT members may find it as hard to leave!
