SRNT NewsletterFebruary/March 2007, Volume 13, Number 1 From the Editor
Dear SRNT Members, This issue of the SRNT Newsletter is coming to you a bit later than usual, simply because this is the issue wherein we typically highlight the annual meeting, including acknowledgement of the SRNT Award recipients. If you were not fortunate to attend, I hope you enjoy Eric Donny's meeting recap, which may inspire you to join us next year, when we'll be in a new venue: Portland , Oregon . Thanks go out to Raphaela Finkenauer, who captured downtown Austin for us. Unfortunately, photographs of the SRNT award recipients were not available yet when we had to go to press with this issue, so you can look forward to seeing those in the next issue. As you might recall from my last column, this issue marks the end of my term as Editor. There is a certain irony to this rather "hefty" issue. I say this because, all along, I've been an incessant worrier with respect to what I would cover in the next issue _ fears that stubbornly persisted despite the fact that SRNT members never failed to deliver on their offers and agreements to provide contributions. The fact that this issue is probably longer than you are used to reading is due to the interaction of my angst and your dedication to our mission. Thanks to your efforts and commitment, this issue contains our usual features, as well as a few additional articles. Ellen Gritz provides us with the "grand finale" of her orchid photos along with some parting thoughts as she transitions from our President to Past President status. SRNT President Ray Niaura met the first challenge of his new role by turning around his column in record time -- a task I kind of had to spring on him at the Austin meeting. Thanks, Ray! As for our regular features, for the Book Review, Linda Pederson and Patricia Richter have provided us with a commentary on Tony George's new edited book entitled Medication Treatments for Nicotine Dependence. Our "Featured Program" for this issue is the Pharmacology Laboratory at the University of Verona, thanks to Christian Chiamulera's report. Finally, Bill Riley and the NIH TANRIG have contributed an update on funding opportunities for nicotine research. And, in terms of new contributions, Jack Henningfield, Neil Benowitz, and David Burns share some thoughts on the Massachusetts Department of Health report that the machine measured nicotine yield of cigarettes increased an average of 10% from 1998 to 2004. In addition to the article about the Verona program, this issue highlights two events taking place outside of the US, making this, I think, our most "global" issue yet! Martin Raw, Analice Gigliotti, and Beatriz Champagne have prepared an update on their plans for the first SRNT Latin America Meeting & Second Iberoamerican Meeting on Tobacco Control, and Silvia Thommen summarizes plans for the upcoming 4th European Conference Tobacco or Health, which will take place in Basle, Switzerland, October 11-13, 2007. At the Austin meeting, I was able to spend some time with our new Editor, Karen Cropsey, to familiarize her with the process of putting out our newsletter. (I also encouraged her to be more confident than I have tended to be about having enough to cover!) Karen has a rather unique research niche studying tobacco-related issues among prison populations. To familiarize you with her work, I draw your attention to two of her recent publications on our Member Publications list. If you have suggestions, contributions, comments, or feedback for future issues, you can reach the "new" Karen at klcropsey@vcu.edu, at least for the short-term. Karen will be taking a position at the University of Alabama in the near future, but I'm sure she'll keep you posted on how to reach her! Thank you for this opportunity to have served as newsletter Editor for the past three years. It has truly been a pleasure working with such an exceptional group of people. A special debt of gratitude goes out to the Newsletter Committee (Judith Gordon, Ellen Gritz, Jacques Le Houezec, John Hughes, and Rick Brown) who have helped out with each issue, behind the scenes. All the best to each of you as you go forward with your efforts in nicotine and tobacco research and tobacco control. Warm regards,
