Towards a Smoke-Free Europe:
The 4th European Conference on Tobacco or Health
Basle, Switzerland, October 11-13, 2007

by Silvia Thommen

What is the current situation with tobacco control in Europe? What has been achieved and what still needs to be done en route to a tobacco-free Europe? These are some of the main questions for discussion at the 4th European Conference Tobacco or Health (ECToH 07), which will take place in Basle, Switzerland, from October 11-13, 2007.

The Swiss Cancer League, in cooperation with the Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) and the German Cancer Society is organizing the upcoming ECToH 07. The conference will present an overview of the state of the art in tobacco control and prevention and aims to find a successful route towards a smoke-free Europe - with professional and inspiring speeches and discussions.

The goal is clear: Europe must become tobacco-free! You are cordially invited to join us in your commitment to reach this goal and to register for the 4th European Conference Tobacco or Health through the official website http://www.ectoh07.org.

The main issues at the conference will be the presentation of new results on Health and Tobacco, Passive Smoking and Health, the state of implementation of the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC), and the relevance of products with reduced toxic effects. Other topics at the ECToH 07 will be Smoking and Youth, Smoking and Sports, Smoking and Women, as well as the tobacco industry's strategies and impact on society. For detailed information please download the preliminary program at http://www.ectoh07.org or order your hard copy by sending your address to office@ecto07.org.

The conference will be organized around plenary sessions including a round table with Health Ministers and a variety of parallel sessions with oral and poster presentations. The force of the ECToH 07 lies not only in the profound analyses to be presented by the invited experts concerning tobacco and health but also in its focus on solutions for the future. The goal is to transform knowledge into action and to promote a large, committed, and encouraged discourse between the fields of science, public health, politics, and the general public.

The authorities' and the population's interest in creating and accepting new legal measures have increased enormously. The ECToH 07 is therefore a timely and opportune occasion in the effort to decrease the impact on public health caused by tobacco. Come to Basle in October 2007 to share knowledge and experience from research and practice, establish and renew personal contacts, and enjoy the beautiful region around Basle.

Please do not hesitate to contribute your knowledge to the Congress by submitting your abstract by March 30, 2007. More details about the Call for Abstracts are available at http://www.ectoh07.org. Please forward the above information about ECToH 07 to any other interested participants or parties.
