Pfizer Global Research Awards For
Nicotine Dependence (GRAND)

Pfizer has launched the Global Research Awards for Nicotine Dependence (GRAND) to support research into nicotine dependence and its treatment - including smoking cessation. Six major grants of USD $150,000 will be awarded in 2008, along with an additional 6 awards of USD $50,000 reserved for junior researchers. The GRAND awards are open to researchers worldwide.

The Global Research Awards for Nicotine Dependence (GRAND) 2008 Advancing the Understanding of the Mechanisms of Nicotine Dependence and Its Treatment USD $150,000 and USD $50,000 awards

Pfizer Inc is pleased to announce the inaugural funding of the Global Research Awards for Nicotine Dependence (GRAND). The GRAND Program is a unique opportunity for Pfizer to reinforce its commitment to supporting tobacco and nicotine dependence research, including smoking cessation, at research institutions throughout the world. The mission of the GRAND Program is to advance the understanding of the mechanisms of tobacco and nicotine dependence and its treatment. The program will support established researchers and encourage the development of junior researchers in this field.

The intent of the program is to fund 6 grants of up to USD $150,000, which are open to all investigators, with 6 additional grants of up to USD $50,000 provided specifically for junior researchers.

Basic and clinical research proposals should focus on mechanisms of tobacco and nicotine dependence, and may be in any of the following areas:

· Genetics, molecular biology, neurobiology and neuropharmacology
· Human laboratory (eg, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, cravings) and animal behavior
· Pharmacotherapy of smoking cessation and relapse, and/or its interaction with behavioral support
· Characterization of subtypes of smokers and appropriate interventions
