SRNT NewsletterMay/June 2005, Volume 11, Number 2 From the Editor
Dear SRNT Members, As one of those who were unable to attend this year's meeting in Prague, I have found this issues contributions to be particularly informative. I hope you, too, will enjoy reading the meeting summary provided by David Drobes, Suzanne Colby, and Robert West, as well as the supplemental pieces about the pregnancy workshop (contributed by Jacques Le Houezec) and the pre-conference on global tobacco research (contributed by Ken Ward). Thanks to the fine photography skills of Stan Rowin and Raphaela Ninowski, those of you who were not able to attend can get a glimpse of this year's conference. For those of you who were there, I hope these images will evoke some fond memories! As always, the May issue marks a transition period for SRNT because, at the Annual Meeting each year, recently elected SRNT officers begin moving into their new roles. It has been my pleasure to work on this issue with our new President, David Balfour, who, much to my amazement, did not seem to be unduly fazed by my request that he generate the President's Column for this issue immediately upon returning back to his office from Prague. I am sure that, after reading his commentary, you will agree that Dr. Balfour is quite seamlessly assuming his new role and that we are quite fortunate he was willing to step into the leadership role so effectively managed by Ken Warner this past year. Congratulations go out to our other new Executive Officers, President-Elect Ellen Gritz, Secretary-Treasurer Laura Cousino Klein, and Member Delegate to Africa, Asia, Oceana and Latin America (AAOLA) Abu Abdullah. I hope you will join me in sending a hearty thanks to our outgoing Secretary-Treasurer, Cindy Pomerleau, who has served SRNT tirelessly (in various roles) over the years since its inception, and to Nancy Rigotti, our Past-President, who has also served SRNT in countless ways. Speaking of changes, I've been asked to remind you of the new SRNT office location. The details are listed elsewhere in the newsletter, but I don't think it can hurt to remind everyone that the main office has moved and that the new email address is info@srnt.org. On a related note (i.e. change), I'd like to alert you to some more big news: Our SRNT Newsletter Editorial Assistants, Minden Shadle and Ryan Sexton, will be getting married this month. Congratulations to the bride and groom! This issue highlights the impressive research efforts of the University of Pennsylvania TTURC and the Center of Excellence in Cancer Communication Research. We owe our thanks to Megan Hasimatis for preparing this informative summary! Likewise, Mark Parascandola hs taken time out of his busy schedule to read and review a new book for us entitled Unfiltered: Conflicts over Tobacco Policy and Public Health (Feldman & Bayer). This book review makes a timely contribution to SRNT's increasing efforts to attend to global issues in tobacco control. Stay tuned for the August issue's report on the activities of another major research laboratory: Alex Prokhorov will be preparing a summary of the research activities that are taking place at the University of Texas' MD Anderson Cancer Center. Also in that upcoming issue, you can look forward to reading a review of Tobacco: Science, Policy & Public Health (Oxford University Press); Jim Pankow and his colleagues are probably reading that tome on our behalf as we read this issue. Phillip Gardiner's group at the Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (TRDRP) of the University of California will provide us with a summary of the contributions of Charyn Diane Sutton, the recently deceased tobacco research and control advocate and well as, possibly, a piece on the California prison systems plans to go smoke-free. Please do not hesitate to send me your suggestions, contributions, comments, letters, and feedback on both content and format. In particular, I am always looking to identify SRNT members who would be willing to prepare reports on their program's activities, prepare book reviews, or prepare original contributions or commentaries. You are welcome contact me at ksaules@emich.edu or by more-traditional methods, if you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to future issues. Warm regards,
