SRNT Newsletter

May/June 2006, Volume 12, Number 2

From the Editor

by Karen Saules

Dear SRNT Members,

Welcome to the Spring issue of the SRNT Newsletter!

By the time this issue reaches you, those of you on schedules that revolve around academic semesters should be able join me in a collective sigh of relief that we have survived yet another busy year. I know that I, for one, have big ambitions about all the neglected research projects and manuscripts that I am going to tackle before my fall schedule rears its head. I'm just hoping that my productivity will match my unbridled optimism!

I must say I am truly impressed (and grateful!) that so many of you were able to find time to send newsletter contributions during which what I assume must be equally or more challenging time "crunches" on your ends. Just goes to show you how dedicated SRNT members are to our mission, and it certainly makes my job easier. A hearty thanks to all who provided articles or other forms of input for this issue!

This issue brings you updates on the plans for both the upcoming SRNT Europe Meeting and the annual SRNT meeting to be held next Winter in Austin, TX. Linda Pederson has provided us with a summary of research at the CDC's Office on Smoking & Health, and Jennifer Barnett's article will inform you about the current activities at the Duke Center for Nicotine & Smoking Cessation Research. Wasim Maziak has stepped up to the plate again in this issue to help me provide more global coverage by preparing a summary of the work being done at the Syrian Center for Tobacco Studies. Finally, as promised, Paul Aveyard has provided us with a book review of Robert West's Theory of Addiction — a review that further compels me to find some time to finish reading the book sometime this summer!

Stay tuned for the August issue, in which I hope to be able to provide you with a review of the new movie Thank You for Smoking, which is based on Christopher Buckley's 1995 book by the same title. One SRNT member, in particular, is making a concerted effort to view and review the movie for us, but if others also see it, please send me your thoughts and I can combine everyone's sentiments into a summary report.

We also have plans in place to bring you double-header book reviews of Assessment of Addictive Disorders (Donovan & Marlatt) and Relapse Prevention (Marlatt & Donovan) _ two books which are meant to be read in tandem, which David Kalman has graciously agreed to do for us. I anticipate that the next issue will also bring you an article about the research activities of the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Research Program, as well as a report on the new UICC/SRNT partnernship to run treatobacco.net.

Please do not hesitate to send me your suggestions, contributions, comments, letters, and feedback on both content and format. In particular, I am always looking to identify SRNT members who would be willing to prepare reports on their program's activities, prepare book reviews, or prepare original contributions or commentaries. You are welcome contact me at ksaules@emich.edu, or by more-traditional methods, if you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to future issues.

Warm regards,
