SRNT Newsletter

May/June 2007, Volume 13, Number 2

From the Editor

by Karen Cropsey

Dear Colleagues,

It is with great pleasure that I take on the task and challenge of being the new SRNT newsletter editor. I am excited by the direction of SRNT and the impact that the organization has made in advancing the science of tobacco dependence and treatment. First, I want to thank my predecessor, Karen Saules for the many hours she has devoted to helping me with the transition of the newsletter. You will notice that the format of the newsletter is the same as under Karen and I plan to continue with the same features and columns that she has established. I also want to thank the many contributors who have sent in articles for this issue and others who have provided suggestions for upcoming stories.

In this issue you will notice that we are highlighting the many international SRNT and other tobacco conferences that are being convened in the upcoming months. Attending these conferences is a wonderful opportunity to learn about international tobacco control and research efforts as well as interact with our many colleagues from around the world. Plus, it provides a terrific excuse to travel abroad, see many different parts of the world and learn about a new culture. From September 5th-7th the 2nd SRNT Latin American meeting will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. This conference has several interesting sessions including updates on treatment and tobacco control policies. At the same time, the 1st Oceania Tobacco Conference will be held from September 4th -7th in Auckland, New Zealand. This conference promises to have something for everyone in the area of tobacco control. The following month, the 9th SRNT Europe Conference will be held in Madrid, Spain from October 3rd-6th. In addition, the planning committee has just announced that Rome will be site for the 10th SRNT European Conference in 2008. Finally, it is not too early to save the date and start planning for the 14th World Conference on Tobacco or Health which will be held in India on February 8th -12th, 2009.

I want to welcome our new SRNT President Ray Niaura and the other new officers for SRNT. Ray has written an update on the U.S. Public Health Service Clinical Practice Guideline: Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence which is expected to be released for comment later in 2007. This update will incorporate many of the new Evidence Based Practices and advances in tobacco treatment, including the new pharmacotherapies that have recently become available. In addition, this issue also highlights the treatment and research activities of the ACT Center in Jackson, Mississippi and provides an update on current funding opportunities for tobacco research by the TANRIG group. We also have a book review of Stress and Addiction: Biological and Psychological Mechanism edited by Mustafa Al'Absi. Finally, as in every issue, we have included recent member publications, member accomplishments, faculty, post-doc and staff job opportunities. Please keep sending them to me and I will do my best to include them in the newsletter.

As I am preparing to get this newsletter sent out, I am also in the process of preparing for a different kind of bundle of joy—the birth of my second child at the end of June. I am also moving to Birmingham, Alabama to start in the Department of Psychiatry at UAB in September. You can reach me up until the end of August at my Virginia Commonwealth University email address: klcropsey@vcu.edu. I will be sending out a new email and other contact information in September from UAB. This definitely promises to be a busy and exciting summer, full of lots of change and new beginnings. Please feel free to contact me with your suggestions for future articles, books to review, job and other advertisements, and member publications. I want to continue to strive to make this newsletter as useful to the SRNT membership as possible. Have a wonderful summer!

Sincerely,
