SRNT NewsletterAug/Sept 2005, Volume 11, Number 3 From the Editor
Dear SRNT Members, I hope you enjoy reading this Summer issue of the SRNT Newsletter. In fact, I hope that you are enjoying all aspects of what, for many of us, is a more manageable time of year! I know that many of you are finally getting a bit of well-deserved time off, so I certainly appreciate that a number of you were nonetheless available to provide contributions for this issue. This issue highlights the activities of Project ASPIRE (University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center), thanks to Alex Prokhorov being able to rise to the occasion after his recent grant application deadline thanks, Alex! Likewise, Jim Pankow was able to find time for some some leisurely (!) summer reading in order to provide us with a commentary on the new book from Oxford University Press entitled Tobacco: Science, Policy and Public Health, which you will note was a product of the efforts of many SRNT members along with some noteworthy others. In addition to these and other regular newsletter sections, I think you will find the article on smoking in Argentina, provided by Luis Wehbe and Peter Hajek, to be quite informative. I would like to share a few sentiments in response to President Balfour's encouragement that more of us junior members of the Society consider taking a role in its organization and governance. I know that I was rather reluctant to do this, myself, preferring to simply "fly under the radar" and observe the "goings on" without sticking my neck out. It was with great trepidation in one of those all-too-fleeting moments when you feel really on top of things that I responded to Judith Gordon's listserv solicitation for a replacement newsletter editor. To be quite frank, I secretly hoped that she might have already found someone else. However, I can honestly tell you I have absolutely no regrets about taking on this more active role. Thanks to frequent communications with so many of you, in preparation for each newsletter issue, I now have a much stronger connection with the Society and its members. I heartily encourage others of you who might be considering sticking your toes into the water, to jump right in! (Can you tell I've been spending a bit too much time on the water, lately?) Please don't hesitate to contact me if you are considering getting more involved and might be wondering about whether and how to do so. As always, I'm planning ahead for the next newsletter. Stay tuned for the November issue, in which Jack Henningfield and I plan to provide you with a summary of nicotine-related research that we learn about at the American Psychological Association (APA) annual meeting in August (Washington, DC). I hope that the SRNT Program Committee will give us an update on the plans for our Orlando meeting, as well. Also, we will be including a report on the activities and future plans of the Minnesota TTURC and a review of APA's new book entitled Nicotine Dependence: Understanding and Applying the Most Effective Treatment Interventions by Charles E. Dodgen. Finally, Jonathan Foulds and Matt Barrs are working to provide an update on the status of Federal (Medicare) funding for smoking cessation treatment. Please do not hesitate to send me your suggestions, contributions, comments, letters, and feedback on both content and format. In particular, I am always looking to identify SRNT members who would be willing to prepare reports on their program's activities, prepare book reviews, or prepare original contributions or commentaries. You are welcome contact me at ksaules@emich.edu, or by more-traditional methods, if you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to future issues. Warm regards,
