SRNT NewsletterAugust/September 2006, Volume 12, Number 3 From the Editor
Dear SRNT Members,
When I haven't been off enjoying these fine summer months with family and friends, I've been here in the office, where, among other things, I have somehow managed to pull the pieces together for this newsletter, thanks in no small part to all the great ideas and contributions I've gotten from so many of you. This issue highlights the activities of two very productive research programs: Judith Gordon has prepared us a summary of current projects at the Oregon Research Institute, and Ivana Croghan and colleagues have contributed a piece about ongoing efforts at the Mayo Clinic Nicotine Research Program. Next month, I hope to be able to bring you a report about the ImpacTeen Project, which is supported by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and administered by the University of Illinois at Chicago. This issue also brings you Martin Raw and Sinéad Jones' update on the new developments within treatobacco.net. In addition, thanks to the efforts of Bill Riley and his colleagues at the NIH Tobacco and Nicotine Research Interest Group (TANRIG), we are starting a new feature, which, until someone can come up with a catchier title, we are simply calling Updates from the NIH TANRIG. I am optimistic that, through this mechanism, the NIH TANRIG can help keep us all abreast of new funding opportunities, program announcements, policy shifts, NIH sponsored conferences and reports, and other NIH-related efforts of interest to SRNT members. If you have any NIH-related questions, please just let me know and I can forward them to the TANRIG group for discussion in this new column. Our Book Review this month covers Marlatt and Gordon's new edition of Relapse Prevention, thanks to David Kalman adding this to his summer reading list on our behalf. Next month, you can look forward to reading a review of David Moyer's book entitled The Tobacco Book: A Reference Guide of Facts, Figures, and Quotations about Tobacco as well as a movie review of Thank You for Smoking, which recently came out on VHS/DVD. Next month, I also hope to bring you a "Q&A" Interview with Ron Davis, SRNT Member and new president-elect of the AMA. As always, please do not hesitate to send me your suggestions, contributions, comments, letters, and feedback on both content and format. In particular, I am always looking to identify SRNT members who would be willing to prepare reports on their program's activities, prepare book reviews, or prepare original contributions or commentaries. You are welcome contact me at ksaules@emich.edu, or by more-traditional methods, if you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to future issues. Warm regards,
