SRNT NewsletterNovember/December 2004, Volume 10, Number 4 From the Editor
Dear SRNTers, At SRNT's 10th Annual meeting last Winter in Scottsdale, Judith Wilkenfeld, J.D., gave a stimulating talk entitled "Making a Difference How Good Science Makes Good Policy." I was inspired by this presentation, but must admit to feeling slightly doubtful that we would be able to move forward on this agenda at much more than a snail's pace. Subsequent to my bout of pessimism, I have been quite encouraged and impressed by the efforts of various SRNT members in recent months. Like Ken Warner, I am reluctant to name names, for fear of overlooking important contributions, but I think you will agree that SRNT's priorities and concerns were clearly and effectively promoted by those involved in the complicated negotiations over the FDA bill. We owe them a debt of gratitude for grappling with was undoubtedly a challenging political process. Both Ken Warner and Mitch Zeller have provided contributions to this newsletter to bring you up to date on that situation. I was also heartened to see SRNT members voice our concerns in the media, particularly by proving some balance in Peter Jenning's September "Tobacco Files" report. On a personal note, the loss of a family member to tobacco-related illness last month heightened my commitment to our mission. I hope you enjoy this Fall issue of the SRNT newsletter, which includes a number of interesting articles, thanks to SRNT members taking time out of their busy schedules to keep you informed. Susan Collins has provided us with an overview of the many exciting presentations that were made at the October SRNT Europe meeting, which was held in Tübingen, Germany; David Drobes has provided a summary of the Program Committee's progress in planning what is sure to be an impressive conference in Prague next March. You might recall that my new goal is to highlight the activities of a different research program in each issue. In this issue, you can learn about the exciting projects that are in the works at the Virginia Youth Tobacco Poject; in the next issue, we plan to highlight recent developments at the USC Transdisciplinary Tobacco Use Research Center. If you would like to tell us about what your program is doing, please let me know so that we can plan ahead for future issues of the SRNT newsletter! As always, please do not hesitate to send me your suggestions, contributions, comments, letters, and feedback on both content and format. You are welcome contact me at ksaules@emich.edu, or by more traditional methods, if you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to future issues. Warm regards,
