and the 7th Annual European Conference
by David Drobes
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the 11th Annual Meeting of the Society for
Research on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) to be held jointly with the 7th Annual SRNT
European Conference, March 20-23, 2005 at the Prague Hilton in Prague, Czech Republic. The meeting
will begin with an Opening Reception the evening of Sunday, March 20, followed by three days of
"hold onto your hat" scientific programming. Featured aspects of the program are as follows:
Keynote Address: Dr. Derek Yach, Lecturer in Epidemiology and Public Health at
Yale University and former Representative of the Director-General of the World Health Organization,
will deliver the keynote address, entitled "Injecting Greater Urgency into Global Tobacco Control,"
on Monday, March 21, 9:00 am.
Clinical Theme Lecture: Dr. Karl Fagerström, President of Fagerström Consulting and
Director of the Smokers Information Centre, will deliver a lecture entitled "The Past, Present and Future
of Treatment for Tobacco Dependence" on Monday, March 21, 3:30 pm.
Pre-Clinical Theme Lecture: Dr. Eric Kandel, University Professor of Physiology and
Psychiatry at the Center for Neurobiology and Behavior of the Columbia University College of Physicians
and Surgeons and 2000 Nobel Laureate in Medicine, will deliver a lecture entitled "Molecular Biology
of Learning and Chronic Drug Seeking Behavior" on Tuesday, March 22, 3:30 pm.
Public Health/Epidemiology Theme Lecture: Dr. Ann McNeill, Honorary Senior
Research Fellow at University College London, will deliver a lecture entitled "The Regulation of Nicotine
and Tobacco and its Impact on Public Health" on Wednesday, March 23, 10:30 am.
Award Address: As recipient of the 2005 Doll/Wynder Award for Research in Epidemiology
and Public Health, Dr. Michael Fiore (Professor of Medicine and Director of the Center for
Tobacco Research and Intervention at the University of Wisconsin) will deliver an address entitled
"Investing in Tobacco Control Research: We Can Move the Mountain" during the Awards
Presentation session.
Other Meeting Events: As in previous SRNT meetings, a highlight of the program will
be symposia, paper session, and poster sessions that represent three primary conference
tracks: pre-clinical, clinical, and public health/epidemiology. There will also be a New Investigator's
Paper Session, a Member's Meeting, and exhibitors on hand throughout the conference.
In addition to the main scientific program, the
SRNT Global Network Committee is organizing an exciting pre-conference meeting on Sunday, March 20, that will highlight issues
and opportunities in global tobacco research. There will also be several workshops and
panel discussions offered during the lunch break on Monday and Tuesday, including a
workshop sponsored by the SRNT Training Committee, and another one by the editors and publishers of
the scientific journal, Nicotine & Tobacco
Research. Additional workshop proposals are
being solicited and will be announced prior to the meeting. Please visit the SRNT
website (www.srnt.org) for a preliminary meeting schedule, as well as information about
accommodations, meeting registration, and traveling to Prague.
The SRNT conference in Prague is sure to be the event-of-the-year in the nicotine and
tobacco research field! Don't miss it!
