The 13th Annual SRNT Meeting Austin, TX Feb. 21 - 24, 2007
By Eric Donny, Janet Audrain-McGovern, & Cynthia Conklin
We are pleased to invite you to participate in the 13th Annual Meeting of the Society for Research
on Nicotine and Tobacco (SRNT) which will be held February 21-24, 2007 at the Hilton Austin Hotel in
Austin, Texas, USA.
We have made a couple of scheduling changes this year. The meeting will begin with opening
remarks, the Awards Ceremony, and the Ferno Award lecture on Wednesday evening at 5:30 PM with a reception
to follow. As a consequence of this change, the conference will conclude earlier on Saturday (2:00
PM). Please make every effort to arrive in time for the opening plenary session and to stay until the
conference concludes on Saturday, as the presenters at the start and end of the conference deserve our attention.
We have an outstanding scientific program developing. Featured aspects of the program are as follows:
Keynote Address: On Thursday, February
22nd, Dr. Jean-Pierre Changeux, Department of
Neuroscience, Pasteur Institute will deliver the keynote address entitled
Brain Nicotinic Receptors: From Molecular Biology to Cognition and Addiction.
Clinical Theme Lecture: On Thursday, February
22nd, Dr. Kenneth Perkins, Professor of
Psychiatry, Psychology and Epidemiology, University of Pittsburgh, will deliver a lecture entitled
Sex Differences in Nicotine and Non-Nicotine
Reinforcement and Reward: Implications for Smoking Cessation
Treatment.
Pre-Clinical Theme Lecture: On Friday, February
23rd, Dr. Anthony Caggiula, Professor and Chair
of Psychology, University of Pittsburgh, will deliver a lecture entitled
What is the Role of Nicotine in Smoking? A Perspective from Animal Research.
Public Health/Epidemiology Theme

Control Research Institute, The Cancer Council Victoria, will deliver a lecture entitled
Integrating Tobacco Industry and Tobacco Use Control: Tackling Harm and Dependence in a Culture of
Consumption.
Awards Addresses: As recipient of the 2007 Ove Ferno Award, which honors a scientist who has
made groundbreaking advances in clinical research related to nicotine and tobacco, Dr.
Sharon Hall, of the Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco, will deliver an address entitled
Treating Tobacco Dependence as a Chronic, Relapsing Disorder: Co-morbidities and Complexities.
As recipient of the SRNT 2007 Jarvik-Russell Young Investigator Award, Dr.
Judith Prochaska, of the Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco, will deliver an address entitled
Treating Nicotine Dependence in Psychiatry.
Other Meeting Events: As in previous SRNT meetings, the program will feature symposia, paper
sessions, and poster presentations that represent three primary conference tracks: pre-clinical, clinical,
and public health/epidemiology. A major aim of this meeting is to facilitate connections and
communication among these three disciplinary approaches, within the scientific program and during informal
networking and poster sessions. There will also be a Members' Meeting, and exhibitors will be on hand
throughout the conference.
In addition to the main scientific program, there will be pre-conference satellite meetings on
Wednesday, February 21st. We will send additional information about these meetings via the listserv as soon as
it becomes available.
Finally, there will also be several workshops and panel discussions offered between 6 and 7 PM
on Thursday, February 22nd. Workshop proposals are being solicited and will be announced prior to
the meeting. If you would like to organize a workshop for the annual meeting, please contact the
Program Chair, Eric Donny, at edonny@pitt.edu.
Visit the SRNT website (http://www.srnt.org/meeting/2007/index.html
) for a preliminary meeting schedule, as well as information about accommodations, meeting registration, and traveling to Austin. The
SRNT conference aims to bring you the most cutting-edge research in the nicotine and tobacco field.
It is not too late to be a part of the scientific program. Submit your latest (and greatest)
research findings in time for our Rapid Response Abstract Submission.
The submission deadline is Friday, January 12, 2007. More information about rapid response submissions is available on
the SRNT website.
We look forward to seeing everyone in Austin!

factors in smoking reinforcement, and translation of human and animal research on nicotine addiction.
Janet Audrain-McGovern, 2007 Program Co-Chair, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry
and a member of the Cancer Center at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Her research interests
center around understanding the bio-behavioral predictors of adolescent smoking acquisition and translating these
