SRNT NewsletterNovember/December 2006, Volume 12, Number 4 From the Editor
Dear SRNT Members, I hope this issue finds you experiencing a bit of a reprieve, having successfully submitted your abstracts for the upcoming Austin SRNT meeting, but not quite yet having to scramble to pull your presentations together! Of course, it is surely a pipe dream I'm having, since I know we all have so many exciting and important projects underway all the time. This I know from each Newsletter issue's impressive list of member publications, which you might want to peruse to get a quick overview of all that is happening in our field. As you will note from the report on plans for the Austin meeting, Eric Donny, Janet Audrain-McGovern, and Cynthia Conklin are quite busy working to make sure the conference is a huge success. Personally, I can't wait to visit Austin again; I've only been there once, but I recall it being a very vivid and lively town. Amazingly, Sakire Pogun and Gay Sutherland got home from the SRNT Europe meeting and were able to prepare us with a report about that meeting's highlights. From what I have heard (from quite a number of people), Sakire and Gay did a fantastic job pulling the meeting together, a meeting which I am sorry to have missed. Hopefully, by now, they are both enjoying a more relaxing phase of life. Thanks, Sakire and Gay, for all your hard work! This issue highlights the exciting activities of the ImpacTeen project, under Frank Chaloupka's directorship. And, at the request of a number of SRNT members, I am pleased to be able to be able to provide you with Ron Davis's answers to our burning questions about his priorities in his new role as AMA President-Elect. Thanks, Ron, for taking time out of your busy schedule to do this column! Likewise, I think you will enjoy reading our own President's colorful column. As always, Ellen comes through with a number of interesting updates about all that she has been doing to promote SRNT's mission, somehow still reserving enough time to care for her stunning orchids — — amazing! Thanks also go out to Scott Sherman and Martha Tingen, who, respectively, provide us with reviews of the new book Implementing an Inpatient Smoking Cessation Program and a movie recently released on DVD, Thank You for Smoking. I hope you will also enjoy our other regular features, as well, including our new NIH TANRIG column, which began in the last issue. In the February issue, I plan to bring you a mix of regular features and new contributions. In particular, at that time, I hope to be able to tell you more about Karen Cropsey, who will be taking over for me as SRNT Newsletter Editor beginning with the May, 2007, issue, when my three-year term expires. (Boy, did that time sure fly by!) As a brief introduction, I can tell you that she is an Assistant Professor in the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Afffairs, Criminal Justice Department, at Virginia Commonwealth University. She studies smoking and drug abuse within criminal justice populations. Like me, she is also a licensed clinical psychologist. That and the fact that we share the same first name should make for a seamless transition! Please do not hesitate to send me your suggestions, contributions, comments, letters, and feedback on both content and format. In particular, I am always looking to identify SRNT members who would be willing to prepare reports on their program's activities, prepare book reviews, or prepare original contributions or commentaries. You are welcome contact me at ksaules@emich.edu, or by more-traditional methods, if you have any suggestions or would like to contribute to future issues. Warm regards,
