2007 Call for Award Nominations

Doll-Wynder Award for Research in Epidemiology and Public Health: This award is named after Sir Richard Doll and Dr. Ernst Wynder, whose influential research in the 1950's clearly established the link between smoking and lung cancer. The Doll-Wynder Award is given once every three years by the Society for Research on Nicotine and Tobacco. This award is to honor scientists who have made groundbreaking advances in public health, public policy, or epidemiological research. This includes research focused on describing, understanding, or preventing tobacco use or research on the consequences of smoking on populations of smokers. Prize and Presentation: Formal presentation of the award shall be made at the Society's Annual Meeting. The recipient will present a lecture summarizing the work forming the basis of the award. The award consists of a $2000 honorarium, a plaque, and travel and hotel expenses for the annual meeting. Nominees do not have to be members of SRNT. Submitting a Nomination: Nominations must consist of the following: (1) one or more letters of nomination outlining the merits of the nominee; (2) a one page summary of the nominee's research (this can be included in a nomination letter); and (3) a copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae.

John Slade Award: This award honors individuals who have made outstanding contributions to public health and tobacco control through science-based public policy and public advocacy. Nominees must be an SRNT member. The John Slade Award is presented at the annual SRNT Meeting. Presentation: The award and plaque will be presented at the SRNT Annual Meeting. Travel and hotel expenses will be paid by the Society. Submitting a Nomination: To nominate a candidate please submit a letter of nomination along with a copy of the nominee's curriculum vitae. Letters should outline the nominee's accomplishments, values, and contributions of his or her work to eliminating tobacco-caused death and disease.

Jarvik-Russell Young Investigator Award: This award is named after Drs. Murray Jarvik and Michael Russell. Drs. Jarvik and Russell are pioneers in characterizing and studying the mechanisms and treatment of nicotine dependence, and they have successfully mentored many young nicotine and tobacco researchers. The SRNT Jarvik-Russell Young Investigator Award is intended to recognize and honor scientists early in their careers who have made extraordinary contributions to the field of nicotine and tobacco research. Eligibility: In general, the nominee should be no more than 40 years of age at the time of nomination. However consideration will also be given to individuals within 7 years of receipt of their graduate degree. The nominee should be a member of the Society. Selection of the awardee is based on the quality /productivity of the applicant's research. Prize and Presentation: The award, presented at the SRNT Annual meeting, consists of a $1000 honorarium and a plaque. The recipient will also deliver a lecture on their work. Travel and hotel expenses will be paid by the Society. Submitting a Nomination: Nominations must consist of the following: (1) a cover letter outlining the merits of the nominee and his or her research contributions to date; (2) a copy of the candidate's curriculum vitae, and (3) copies of three publications exemplifying the applicant's research contributions.
