SRNT Newsletter

November/December 2007, Volume 13, Number 4

From the Editor

by Karen Cropsey

Dear Colleagues,

It has been a whirlwind of a summer and I am always surprised at how fast the time passes. Of course, this summer has been a bit busier than past summers with having a baby, selling a house, buying a house, moving, and starting a new job!  Now that we are well into the swing of Fall, hopefully things will settle down a bit.  The SRNT membership has also remained busy over the summer and I hope everyone had a chance to attend one of the international conferences that were recently held.  During the months of September and October, the second SRNT Latin American conference, SRNT Europe, and the first Oceana Tobacco conference were held—look for a recap of these conferences in the next issue of the newsletter.

This issue features a preview of the 14th Annual SRNT meeting to be held in Portland, Oregon from February 27 through March 3.  For members who missed the abstract submission in September, the late breaking abstract submission deadline is January 11, 2008.  The main plenary sessions have been selected and the program looks to be an exciting mixture of internationally-known speakers covering topics from bench research to implication for tobacco policy.  The venue for the conference—Portland, Oregon—is a new location for SRNT and should provide plenty of interesting exploration opportunities so you may want to allow extra time for sight-seeing before or after the conference.

We also feature the Association for the Treatment of Tobacco Use and Dependence (ATTUD). This organization has been around for about four years and provides tobacco clinicians a forum for education and an active discussion group centered around issues of treating tobacco dependence. Membership dues for SRNT members are very reasonable ($75) and provide you with access to the listserv and other benefits. To learn more about this organization and/or how to become a member, please go to the website at www.attud.org.

Also in this issue, we have a review of the book “Tobacco Control Policy”, a recap of the First European Seminar on Methodology of Clinical Research in Smoking hosted by the European Centre of Excellence in Clinical Tobacco Research (ECECTR), and the most current NIH and other funding opportunities.  In addition to the most current funding opportunities, the TANRIG article also highlights the August 2007 special issue smoking cessation with young adults published in the American Journal of Public Health (AJPH). Further, the journal Addiction also published a special issue on conceptual and methodological issues in tobacco-related health disparities in October 2007.

The draft version of 2008 Treating Tobacco Use and Dependence guidelines is now available for public review and comment. You can access these guidelines for review at http://a257.g.akamaitech.net/7/257/2422/01jan20071800/edocket.access.gpo.gov

. Finally, I want to close by congratulating Saul Shiffman for his Lifetime Achievement Award from the Good Clinical Practice Journal.

Sincerely,
