Network Goals

The overarching goal of the HD Network is to increase awareness of tobacco-related health disparities research and influence the research agenda so that researchers understand the need to conduct and continue to engage in health disparities research.

Specific Goals

  • Goal 1:Establish mechanisms within SRNT to promote leadership development, diversity, and inclusivity among investigators interested in HD research in industrialized countries.
  • Goal 2: Encourage SRNT members to conduct research that assesses the effects of evidence-based interventions on reducing tobacco use and exposure and on reducing disparities in industrialized countries among the priority populations identified by the HD Network.
  • Goal 3:Stimulate research that increases our understanding of initiation, exposure and tobacco use across the life course among the priority population identified by the HD Network.
  • Goal 4: Encourage research that increases our understanding of disparities in quitting and relapse behaviors, their association with dependence, and the psychosocial and socio-environmental context in which relapse and quitting occur.
  • Goal 5: Generate interest in research that increases our understanding of the biological and genetic mechanisms of nicotine addiction and tobacco-related diseases as well as their interactions with socio-environmental influences.
  • Goal 6: Promote translational research to ensure that culturally appropriate interventions reach the populations in need.
