RE: A Message from the SRNT 2021 Program Chairs-Don't Forget to Submit an Abstract for 2021!

Dear Colleagues,

On behalf of the SRNT 2021 Program Co-Chairs, we are writing to encourage you to submit your work for the upcoming 2021 meeting. We have been working with SRNT leadership and staff extensively and want to reassure you that the meeting will be happening in some format, whether it be completely virtual or a hybrid meeting. For 2021, we are lucky to have adequate time to prepare for either of these situations and make the conference the best it can be, given tough and unpredictable circumstances. No matter the format of the meeting, the SRNT 2021 program will include the most up-to-date, quality tobacco and nicotine science.

Since March, many of us have attended completely virtual meetings, webinars, and conferences and have learned a great deal about what works in these formats. SRNT 2021 has the ability to borrow the best practices from other organizations and meetings and learn from their wisdom. Over the next few months, SRNT leadership will continue to monitor the COVID-19 situation and determine if any in-person conference activity in Baltimore, MD is safe. Regardless, the meeting will happen and you will have the opportunity to share your science. If you are concerned about your ability or willingness to travel, we urge you to still submit your work. Further, we expect that a virtual format (or the option for a virtual format) will allow for potentially more attendees than in past years. Those with insufficient travel funds from all over the world will now have access to live and on-demand content, which means your science is likely to have greater reach and impact. We do not anticipate having to limit the content that is presented at this meeting.

We would also like to note that while the 2020 meeting was not what anyone expected and many excellent presentations had to be cancelled, 2021 will not simply be a re-do of the 2020 meeting. You have the option to re-submit symposia, workshops, or abstracts that were not presented in 2020, but with updated data, and with the understanding that these will be reviewed independently of last year.

2021 Meeting Highlights
We are pleased to announce that our theme for the 2021 annual meeting will be focused on the timely and enduring issues of social justice, health inequality and, importantly, action to correct health disparities of nicotine and tobacco. Many of our plenary sessions will be focused on this conference theme and we will highlight sessions in the meeting program that address these topics.

Over the next few months, we will be highlighting plenary speakers for the 2021 meeting. We are pleased to announce now that Dr. Linda Collins from The Methodology Center at Penn State will be delivering the Clinical Plenary at this year’s meeting.

In Closing
We hope that you will consider submitting your science for the 2021 annual meeting! The deadline is August 11th for symposia and all other abstracts. The SRNT Program Co-Chairs and organization leadership are dedicated to putting on the best possible program for our members and attendees. We appreciate your support during this unprecedented time. We hope to see everyone in Baltimore in February, but if not, we’ll see you virtually!

RE: SRNT 2021 Annual Meeting Update

Members have (understandably) been asking questions about the SRNT 2021 Annual Meeting recently—will it be in person? Will it be virtual? What if my abstract is accepted and the conference is held in Baltimore, but I can’t travel?

While it is too early to say in what format, exactly, the 2021 Annual Meeting will be held, I can tell you that it will, in fact, be held.

The decision about whether or not to hold an in-person meeting (or hybrid, part live/part virtual, meeting) will depend entirely on where things stand with the Coronavirus this fall. SRNT has a contract with the Baltimore Hilton that we’ll be required to honor if the virus is under control to the extent that Baltimore allows large gatherings. In this case, we would reduce the “footprint” and have a smaller in-person meeting, with a virtual component to accommodate those who cannot or choose not to travel.

However, if the situation remains unchanged and Baltimore doesn’t lift restrictions by sometime this fall, we will be able to exit our contract without penalty and the 2021 meeting will be entirely virtual.

The important message is that there WILL BE an SRNT meeting next February. Since the format remains to be determined, we are planning for both the hybrid conference scenario, as well as the fully virtual conference scenario.

In either case, accepted authors will be able to present their research regardless of their ability to travel

So, please do not hesitate to submit your research for peer review and consideration for presentation at SRNT 2021! A reminder that the abstract submission deadline is Tuesday, August 11, 2020.
